Washing and Care Instructions for Wool

Thank you for choosing a disana product.

disana's boiled wool is a wonderful natural product that stands out thanks to its self-cleaning properties. Since the wool still retains a significant amount of natural wool wax (lanolin), it is naturally dirt- and water-repellent.

Please do not wash our disana wool items immediately before wearing them for the first time!

Here is the ultimate guide to keeping your boiled wool items soft and in shape for years to come:

1. The Golden Rule: Less is more

Boiled wool rarely needs to be washed. Often, simply hanging the garment out in the fresh air overnight is sufficient. The moisture in the night air helps the fibers regain their structure and neutralizes odors.

2.How to Treat Stains Correctly

Before reaching for the washing machine, try treating it locally:

• Dry Dirt: Simply let sand or mud dry completely, then carefully brush it out using a soft Wonder Brush or a clothes brush.

• Fresh stains: Gently dab with a damp cloth and a little cold water (do not rub, otherwise the wool will felt).

• Dry dirt: Simply allow sand or mud to dry completely and then carefully brush it out with a soft scrub brush or a clothes brush.

3. If it absolutely has to be the laundry

If washing is unavoidable (e.g., due to heavy soiling or after a season), follow these steps:

Hand wash (recommended)

1. Lukewarm water: Maximum 30°C. Water that is too hot will cause the wool to shrink.

2. Wool detergent: Use a wool detergent with added lanolin.

3. Do not soak: Just give it a quick rinse, do not leave it for long.

4. Rinsing: Rinse with water of the same temperature. Temperature differences ("cold shock") cause matting.

Washing machine (at your own risk)

Only if your machine has a very reliable wool wash cycle:

• Set the temperature to "Cold" or 20°C to avoid water temperature differences.

• Reduce the spin speed to a maximum of 400 revolutions.

4. Drying: No stress at all

• Never put it in the dryer!

• Do not wring: Gently squeeze out the water in a towel.

• Dry flat: Gently pull the garment into shape and lay it flat on a towel. Hanging it on a hanger would cause the heavy, wet felt to stretch out of shape.

5. The lanolin bath (re-oiling)

After washing, wool loses some of its natural protective properties. If you notice that the wool is absorbing moisture more quickly, a wool treatment is advisable.

1. Dissolve wool conditioner (lanolin concentrate) in warm water.

2. Soak the garment in it (according to the instructions on the bottle).

3. Do not rinse, just gently squeeze out excess water and dry.

Pro tip: Pilling (small bobbles) is completely normal with natural wool. You can carefully remove it with a special wool shaver or a pilling comb – afterwards, the garment will look like new!
